North Edmonton - MLAs (Provincial)

NEBA Article from Honourable Deron Bilous, Minister of Economic Development and Trade and MLA for Edmonton-Beverly-Clareview

When Premier Rachel Notley asked me to create the Alberta Jobs Plan, I knew it would be tough. The dramatic and sustained drop in world oil prices is hurting us all – but I also know we have some of the world’s best and most innovative business leaders to help create new jobs and diversify our economy.

I want to acknowledge the many small business leaders who shared their experience and expertise in our Jobs Plan, to create an economy for the future.

Alberta small businesses have a bigger economic impact per capita than small businesses anywhere in the country. In addition to providing jobs so hundreds of thousands of Albertans can earn a living for themselves and their families, they inject about $100 billion dollars a year into our hometowns and neighbourhoods.

That’s why we listened to them and took decisive action when they asked us to implement tax credits other provinces have enjoyed for decades, restore training programs for new entrepreneurs while adding an array of supports for established ones, help them diversify and expand to new markets, cut the small business tax, and increase their access to capital.

Taking their advice, our Jobs Plan increased ATB Financial’s borrowing limits by $1.5 billion with clear direction to make loans available to thousands of small businesses. It also mandated AIMCo, the Alberta Investment Management Corporation, to invest more than $500 million in Alberta companies with strong growth potential. And through our plan we worked with the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) to establish a $1-billion fund for new business loans.

To support investment from venture capitalists, our Jobs Plan includes the new Alberta Investor Tax Credit, which refunds 30 per cent on investments to Alberta small businesses across a variety of sectors. Our Jobs Plan is also refunding part of small businesses’ costs for new machinery, equipment and buildings under the Capital Investor Tax Credit.

To help more Albertans pursue their dream to start a business with a new product or new idea, our plan reinstated funding to provide self-employment training for hundreds of Alberta entrepreneurs. Our plan also provided $10 million to expand small business incubators in the province as we know Alberta small businesses with this support average a 25 per cent annual growth rate, compared to a rate of less than five per cent nationally. And, we worked to expand consulting and mentoring supports to businesses with BDC, so entrepreneurs can launch more start-ups, innovate and expand.

We also doubled funding for a popular technology development program in our Jobs Plan, which will help hundreds of small businesses with marketing, planning, product development, testing and prototyping.

To help small businesses take advantage of new market opportunities around the world, our Jobs Plan expanded their access to our 12 international trade offices and provided Alberta companies reimbursement for up to $20,000 for export activities.

Finally we cut the small business tax by a third, helping ensure we continue to pay billions less total tax than any other province.

If you or someone you know is a small business owner or looking to become one – please visit http://smallbusiness.alberta.ca/ to learn more about available supports.

I want all Alberta’s small business owners to know: you can count on our Jobs Plan to have your back – because you helped us build it.  Working together we will continue to create new jobs and diversify our economy – an economy for the future.

CONGRATULATIONS TO NEBA MEMBER - RESONATE MUSIC SCHOOL & STUDIO - 4 Year in a Row!  From Facebook Post:

So much love and gratitude for the growing community we refer to as the #resonation (who doesn't love a good pun?!) Each and every year we push to improve in any way that we can and we plan to continue that trend in a big way for 2017. Being selected as the Top Choice Music School for four consecutive years has been both humbling and motivating as we know the standards we've set and we want to continue to raise them, while never forgetting that our faults are the most important lessons for growth. Making music a part of one's life is such a great way to improve health and happiness and we're encouraged everyday by the number of people taking this step. Thank you to each and every person who has engaged with Resonate in any capacity. One way or another, you have helped shape us for today and the future and we are forever grateful for that. Let your sound Resonate!
