Commentary

Hello I’m honored to be elected on the board of directors. I’ve had the pleasure of attending many NEBA events and getting to know numerous people & making connections within NEBA. My background is 9+ years in management of small businesses focusing on excellence in customer service. Assisting companies with proper enjoyable safety training has been my passion for almost 3 years. During this time, I’ve attended many OH&S meetings, worked with employment readiness centers, kept up to date with the changing industry, and educated companies how safety affects employees. I’m excited for the opportunity to assist in growing our North Edmonton business community and in keeping Alberta a little safer.

We’re doing a giveaway contest! All new newsletter signups get a chance to win a Tradeshow table for FREE at any event in 2019. Sign up here https://neba.ca/form.php?form_id=13&c=1

Tips & Ideas for You and Your Business

By Joey-Lee Morigeau BComm CPHR RPR

Happy New Year!

As we welcome 2019 we must consider the employment law changes that occurred at the end of 2018. One big change that affects all businesses is the new Cannabis Legislation.  Another two important changes to note is the amendment to the Canada labour Code – Bill C-65 which includes harassment in the workplace and Alberta Employment Standards changes for employing Youth under 12 years of age.

As many employers are aware, on October 17, 2018, Cannabis was legalized in Canada.  This new law protects employees who consume Cannabis.  It is important for all employers to ensure they have updated policies and procedures that comply with legislation and Alberta Human Rights.  Employees have the right to consume cannabis, but also must comply with reasonable duties imposed by their employers.  Ensure your organization and employees are protected.  If you have not developed policies around the new legislation, contact a professional today for further assistance.

In developing a workplace strategy around harassment and violence, the federal government recently passed Bill C-65, an Act to amend the Canada Labour Code (harassment and violence), the Parliamentary Employment and Staff Relations Act and the Budget Implementation Act, 2017.  These changes will affect businesses best practices.  It is recommended to develop your organizations policies to reflect the changes, please discuss further with a human resources professional.  Further details regarding the amendment will be released this year.  To continue to follow and prepare your business follow http://www.parl.ca/DocumentViewer/en/42-1/bill/C-65/royal-assent

Effective January 1, 2019, changes to the Alberta Standards Code include employing youth under the age of 12.  Now, youth under the age of 12 years old can only be employed in an artistic endeavour.  Employers are now required to obtain a permit for artistic endeavours prior to employing a youth under the age of 12. Also note, the allowable working schedule for the youth will be determined during the application for the permit stage.  For more information, refer to https://www.alberta.ca/youth-employment-laws.aspx.

Just a friendly reminder, effective January 1, 2019, the CPP and EI premiums have changed.  Please ensure you update your payroll systems.  To learn more visit https://www.canada.ca/en/services/taxes/payroll.html.

It is best to speak with a professional when preparing for upcoming changes, whether you speak with an employment lawyer or a certified professional human resources specialist for assistance in understanding these changes, it will protect your business and employees.

All the best in 2019.
