Tips & Ideas for You and Your Business

What You Ought to Know about Digital Marketing by Debra Kasowski

Digital marketing is the open highway of communication moving at lightning speeds. Like this, Share that, Tag this person, Comment here, and oh wait – don’t forget to add an “emoji”. Say what?

Before jumping into digital marketing, you need to understand what it is and how to use it effectively otherwise you could be wasting your time by not target your audience in the right place. Digital or social media marketing is communicating through digital or social media platforms such as your website. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. In order to use it effectively, you want to remember social media is about being social.

People are given an opportunity to get to know, like and trust you before they even meet you. Before you post, think about your purpose for posting and whether you are comfortable sharing your posts with a client or future boss - your posts are in the digital world forever! Your posts act like an icebreaker so when you meet in person you can pick up at the last post or conversation. Awkwardness and formalities are often put aside.

Here’s what your posts do:

Get to Know You – Your posts tell people a great deal about you, your core values, what you do, and other interests. If you are running a business, make sure you have a personal page and a business page. What do you want people to know about you?

Get People to Like You – People will decide your “likeability” based on first impressions, the images you post, the language you use, and whether you have a positive attitude. They want to know that your posts are relevant to them. Remember, just because someone did not hit “like” does not mean they did not view your post.

Get People to Trust You – Building trust and rapport is important in any relationship, even more so online. You want to be able to represent what your stand for and what you believe in. Avoid political, racial, or religious jokes or rants – people will start blocking you; they do not want this negativity in their feeds.

To build trust, post a professional picture with a smile. Share testimonials or past client experiences from people who have done business with you. People are more likely to do business with people who have been recommended – a vetted trust. Let people know your past experiences, education, accomplishments, or awards/recognition. Above all, share some of the results you have helped people get.

Intentional Networking

Networking Tip for LinkedIn: Turn on your Bluetooth and Location Services in Settings. Return to your LinkedIn App and Click on Find Nearby when at a networking event. You will be able to add others who have this feature on during the event and start the conversation with them by name. “Hello, __________. I connected with you on LinkedIn – Find Nearby. I would love to learn more about you and what you do.”

Networking Tip - Facebook Events: Find the event you are attending. If there is a Check In option, click checked in, write a post, and/post some pictures. This type of post is a form of cross promotion. You are letting others know about events you are engaging in and promoting the event you are attending. Win-win! You may even see that someone else in your network is attending the event too.

When you add someone as a contact or a friend, remember you need to focus on building the relationship. Don’t start selling to everyone! Doing so is a turn off and people with unfriend or block you. Use the ads feature for sales. They don’t even know you yet – how can they like and trust you. Research shows it takes 5-12 times of connection before people will do business with you.

Sharing Your Expertise

There are many ways to get into the social conversation and share your expertise. The “Spray and Pray” approach is not the way to expose your business to the marketplace. You do not want to attempt to reach everyone. Each platform has a different way of engaging with your audience. Learn more about the platforms you intend to use.

There are a few questions you need to ask yourself before you start posting.

Who is my target audience?

What platforms do they use?

What is my intention for posting? (Inform, Educate, Inspire, Motivate, or Entertain)

What actions do I want them to take?

Leverage Your Resources

Photos. Ensure your photos are easy to view. You do not have to have your own photographer on standby or have new photos take every 2 months. You can purchase high quality stock photos at low cost or use some images on the internet providing they are free to use for commercial purposes or they are of public domain.

Websites and/or Blogs. Your website is a great tool for sharing industry content, tips, techniques, and strategies through a blog or video platform. You can repurpose the content for your posts on other platforms. You want to provide value to your audience and to have call to action to connect with you or rise to a challenge.

Apps to Create Posts. There are several different apps you can use to posts. Canva is a fantastic tool with thousands of images you can use, or you can upload your own. Ripl is great too. You must pay extra to have the watermark removed. Word Swag offers a variety of fonts.

No matter what you decide to post remember that your digital footprint stays forever. Be kind. Be respectful. Make an impact. You never know the difference your post can make. Many friendships have been formed and new clients brought on all because you took the time to let people get to know, like, and trust you. The greatest compliment you can receive when you meet someone in person is, “You are just like your profile; even better in person!”
