Monthly Commentary

Special thanks to Councillors from Ward 1 - 4 and Ward 7 for meeting with us one on one to discuss what's happening in your specific wards. We learned a great many things from community development to special pilot projects to highest percentage increase in value in certain areas.  These are great information for us in delivering NEBA's mission statement.  Thank you for your time and meeting with us.

Thank you also to MP Michael Cooper (St. Albert - Edmonton) and MLA Chris Nielsen (Edmonton-Decore) for attending our breakfast mixer that we hosted yesterday.  It was great to hear how MP Cooper's riding has increased by 20% since 2012 and all business growth and opportunities in North West Edmonton & St. Albert.  Thank you MLA Chris Nielsen for giving us updates from your trip and how AB's activities are being carefully monitored and watched.   It was also great to hear what's happening with Northgate and Northtown Mall area.

Business Introductory Meetings continue to be our most successful event to date. Learning more about each other's businesses, products and/or services.  It's good to know from the last meeting, we were able to send off 9 referrals to our members.

Keeping an eye on information with upcoming AB Provincial Budget to be released March 16, 2017 and Federal Budget date to be announced in the near future.   With President Trump making the First speech to Congress early this week - international business and trade news affecting decisions in investing, labour, industry and other areas.   We look forward to budget information as they are released.

Member Contribution - Sharing Best Practices and Tips for Referrals and Follow ups.

At our breakfast mixer on yesterday, we discussed Referrals and follow up processes.  We invited our members in attendance to write up their process and share it with our readers.  Please see NEBA Member: Matthew Hammond's contribution.

  • Understanding that referrals are both precious in my industry but also tend to create some anxiety in the prospects, I start my process casually professional.  I want them to know that after 15 minutes we should mutually understand whether or not we are a fit, and they will have an opportunity to end the meeting or phone conversation at that time.

From there and throughout the entire process, I look to create value, whether or not that's with me or someone else.  Everyone has financial and investment questions in today's market.  My aim is that through a conversation with me, I can provide both benefit to the prospect in their search for answers, as well as credibility to the referring party who they deal with in business.

There's more to say about how that happens, but in so little words, it's about the integrity of the relationship at hand, and business professionalism in general.  Fostering faith in honourable business people doesn't just build my business but everyone's; and ultimately it makes the day to day labour with a fantastic network of professionals that much more meaningful.
