Happy 150th Birthday Canada!  Since arriving in Canada many years ago, we went from experiencing snow for the first time to seeing many developments and growth locally and nationally.   It's great to see the many tributes and steps taken to celebrate Canada's 150th Birthday.  

From all of us at North Edmonton Business Association, we hope you enjoy this upcoming day, July 1st, amongst friends, family, community and many.  Wishing you great times, great moments and many great memories to cherish.   Hope you have a fantastic time in whatever activities you engage in during this time period. 

With cultural diversity in the mix during this holiday celebration, we like to also announce our upcoming business and community event:

NEBA 2nd Annual Multi-Cultural Children's Talent & Fashion Show. 

Date: Sunday September 3rd, 2017

Time: 12 p.m - 4 p.m

Location: Castle Downs Splash Park

NEBA NPC Scholarship will be given out on this day $500 (Talent), $250 and $100.  We also like to recognize Castle Downs YMCA for their contribution to community with a special donation of $1000 on September 3rd during the event also as part of the NEBA NPC Scholarship awards.  

Last year we had many great participants and vendors involved.  This year we are working with CMEF to add Canada 150 Litfest to the event.  We are targeting 15 tents (Thank you to Councillor Dave Loken (Ward 3), Councillor Bev Esslinger (Ward 2), MLA Nicole Goehring (Edmonton - Castle Downs)and MP Michael Cooper (St. Albert - Edmonton) for letting us borrow your tents to use for the event!).

This event started as a way for North Edmonton Business Association to award NEBA NPC Scholarship to children celebrating their cultural diversity.  Most children have outfits that they wear in celebration of their cultural heritage. We invite them to wear those outfits and be a part of the fashion show!  

This year we are incorporating the talent portion.  Last year so many children performed from Jingle Dance to Scottish Highland Dancing to Singing.  For the talent portion, we will host an event prior to September 3rd to narrow contestants who will perform on September 3rd for the $500 NEBA NPC Scholarship (talent).   

We will post upcoming breakfast mixer and networking events for July and August soon.  Our work business mixer will resume starting in fall.

For now, special thanks to many of the vendors who participated in the June 21 event at Rundle Golf Clubhouse.  It's music to our ears when we hear that vendors connected and services provided being considered by another vendor! Alley renewals to begin in 2019

 At a City Council meeting last month, approval was given to pursue an Alley Renewal Strategy (ARS). Under this strategy, 69% (764 km) of paved alleys and 68 km of gravel alleys will be improved. Funding will be lined up, alleys inspected and rated, and plans laid out. As a result, construction on the alleys most in need of repair will start in 2019.

Over the course of the past decade, I’ve invested significant time and energy into bringing the issue of alley renewal to the forefront.  The ARS outlines a cost-effective, long-term strategy approach to address the renewal and rebuilding of alleys in existing neighbourhoods within 25 years.

This program includes the following major categories:

  •                Alley Reconstruction (the alley is rebuilt from the base layer up)
  •                Alley upgrade (gravel alleys will be paved)
  •                Alley Overlay (the top layer of pavement is scraped off and replaced)

Until now, alleys lacked a funded renewal program therefore renewal only took place either as a result of underground utility renewal projects or local improvement levies borne by property owners. Under the ARS, alley renewal will be rolled into the tax base.

I have always believed that our alleys are an important part of our communities. They’ve been overlooked and taken for granted for too many decades. Under the Alley Renewal Strategy, our alleys will finally receive long overdue updates and maintenance.
