North Edmonton - MLAs (Provincial)

by MLA Heather Sweet (Edmonton - Manning)

To the members of North Edmonton Business Association (NEBA) I’d like start by wishing you and your family Happy Holidays! The business community’s contributions to our province is growing our economy, helping families put food on their tables and ensuring there are gifts under Christmas trees this year and every year.

I’d also like to thank you for your ongoing efforts to sponsor local events and initiatives in our communities that help make life better for all Albertans.

As your MLA for Edmonton-Manning, I recognize more must be done to ensure the economic recovery reaches each and every one in our constituency and across the province.

In the Government of Alberta’s most recent fiscal update, we saw Alberta’s deficit is down and the economic recovery continued in the first six months of the year. Our economy grew at 4.4 per cent last year and since October 2017 we’ve added 42,000 jobs.

Our government continues fighting for what matters, and we are taking action to defend Alberta jobs and get good value for our resources. Decades of failure by successive federal governments has left Albertans unable to transport our oil to new markets through modern, well-regulated pipelines.

As a result, we must sell our oil to one customer - the United States - at one discounted price. In the last few weeks this price gap has reached historic highs because we are producing more product that we have the capacity to move to market.

Industry leaders and Premier Rachel Notley’s energy envoy are working together to tackle this crisis.

In a recent announcement, Premier Notley said we are mandating an across-the-board reduction of 365,000 barrels per day until new transport capacity comes online next year. This measure is only for the short-term and we will review our reduction every month and adjust it as needed.

Our medium term plan to address the backlog and get our oil to market is to buy upwards of 7,000 rail cars to transport our oil.

Our long-term plans is to upgrade and refine our energy products here at home – we’re making progress on this – just north of Edmonton a new upgrading plant is being built by thousands of Alberta workers that will turn Alberta gas into upgraded products.

Doubling support for petrochemical upgrading to more than $2 billion. This move will create as many as 15,500 construction jobs and more than $20 billion in investment.

And our fight for new pipelines will continue because billions of dollars that should be going to creating jobs and supporting schools and hospitals are being lost. Premier Notley is taking this fight to every corner of this country and strong and growing majority of Canadians support us in this fight.

We will not stop until it is built.
